What You Do, Gringo?

I shouldn't travel.
Goats: Safer Than Costa Rican Hookers

Two years in the "paradise" of Costa Rica became personal hell, and 2 years in Slovakia, a country know for horror movie murders left me thinking, "I should settle down..."  I exercise daily and eat healthy, then ruin it with 24 hours of drinking, smoking and 6am clubbing.  I'm loud, politically incorrdect and an embarrassment to be around, yet I'm inevitability in the middle of some hostel party or acting as the leader of a ridiculous, cross-country roadtrip.

This is probably due to musical skills and alcoholic tendencies, rather than some innate charisma or charm (ego.)  Everyone enjoys music and drinking, and throughout my travels I have mastered these two abilities.  If there's a plaza in the city where I'm traveling, I'll be there strumming my guitar and singing.  If there's new travelers at a hostel, I'm the first to buy a bottle for the group and serve shots.

I had a boring, shitty desk job, but went all Fight Club insane and quit that to start traveling.  I've lived in Thailand, Slovakia and am currently in Costa Rica.  I've managed to live a gypsy life off my savings, teaching English, working in hostels and playing guitar.  People said I had funny stories, so despite my disdain for travel blogs, I started one myself.

Why do I hate travel blogs?  Well, most travel blogs read like the self-help section of a bookstore.  I hate self-help books.  The same tired expressions, i.e  finding myself, following my dreams, inspiring, carpe diem, etc.get used constantly by everyone, like that pornstar whose always in the middle of the bukkake scenes.

For the moment I'm pretending to 'settle down' by looking into buying a hostel/hotel property in The Balkans.  I never intended to stay there, but due to an immigration debacle which resulted in me being illegally stranded there for 2 months, I fell in love with this place I had known very little about before.   I hope these stories have the same effect.  You may not find the travel advice you were looking for, but hopefully you will find some valuable information you didn't know you needed.

Or you might just think I'm a sick bastard.
